Inauguration Day 2017

This morning as I sat stunned in the loudness of my house which echoed the sounds of chaotic toddler musings, I cusped my cup of luke-warm coffee and this thought occurred to me, "what was the political climate like when I was my daughter's age?"

When I was about to turn 5, our nation was getting ready to embrace president Ronald Reagan's second term, and most women everywhere were at home raising babies and very few were out there in the workforce. Now, I can look down my street from the cul-de-sac to the historic McGregor Blvd, and tell you I'm one of the few that gave up a job with a 401K to stay home and raise babies. But, I will say every working mother on my street IS A TEACHER. Yet, most women I know are out there slaying it all day and night.  There's so much of me that wants to put on my Tory Burch and rock it with them. I miss the energy a workforce can give you.

"These times they are a changing." - Bob Dylan

George Orwell had waxed poetic about his thoughts of my soon-to-be fifth year in his book, '1984.' And to Cliff Note it for you, it's about the power of a life under constant surveillance. His main thoughts are: "War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength." So that was 1984? It sounds a lot like the delusional utopia the USA presents now, in 2017. I have multiple baby monitors in my home and let's be real people will film someone burning in a car before they will drag them out of it.

I thought maybe it might be interesting to gain the political insight from the mind of my soon-to-be 5 year old babe. When I spoke to her about having a black president, a woman run for office, and a non-political informant (who was a former reality star) win the presidential candidate role...it all came down to this simple response,, "we have a new president? That's cool."

She could care less. At 5, I could care less. If you survey many people, they have NO CLUE who Mike Pence is and his new position in society, but they can spill their mind about their disposition of a reality star as our nations president.

In reflection, Mr. Trump, best of luck and Godspeed.
